For meaningful, measurable increases to your skills in composition, a lot of attention will be spent here.
Improvisation
Improvisation is tantamount to great composition. The skill for intuiting the musical idea in real time, then sculpting and developing it, is another area we will spend time with.
Form and aural skills
Writing a great melody or foundational idea for one's composition is part of the puzzle. But organizing it in such a way so that the choices in a piece feel like a 'foregone conclusion' for a 9 minute piece of music concern thorough examination of form.
Orchestration/part preparation/mockups
The final component of composition is whom you may be writing for, and how you translate your ideas for various scenarios. Orchestration and instrumentation will be a necessary topic for us to fully engage on the area of music composition.
