Timothy Schmalz

Composer

Timothy Schmalz is a composer for visual media and concert hall.

His independent work includes original music for feature films (Sticky), television, commercials, and documentaries. In 2024, he produced his first classical release, Sonata for Flute and Piano, with Detroit Symphony principal flutist Hannah Hammel Maser and pianist Zhihua Tang.

Tim began his career writing additional music for a number of prominent A-list composers, including Heitor Pereira, Blake Neely, Tom Holkenborg, and Lorne Balfe.

Tim attended Berklee College of Music and UCLA, but credits his expertise in composition to self-training. He was awarded a place at the ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop in 2018, where he was mentored by John Williams' orchestrator William Ross. In 2021 he was granted a slot in the Los Angeles Film Conducting Intensive, mentored by Conrad Pope, and premiered his piece "The Magi" with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Puerto Rico.

Apart from film composition, Tim is an independent music theorist and has produced numerous translated musical treatises spanning the Renaissance to the twentieth century.
