Before ever stepping foot into the world of composition, Tim had to gain a level of mastery with an instrument first. The knowledge and instincts one can ingest through this process as an instrumentalist are only ones that can lead to a distinctive identity as a composer; and also can help them more consistently deliver accurate iterations of what musical ideas are sparking within. These skills are realized first through an instrumental level, and then translate towards compositional ability, where the composer can begin to study idioms of each other distinctive instrument and how best to arrange them.
As a result of this, when the project calls for it, Tim plays all of his own guitar parts for his own recordings and compositions, as well as for his friends.
